Parabens

It is necessary to useΒ paraben-freeΒ products as they can be harmful to your skin. Parabens are a group of chemicals used as preservatives for products as it helps prolong their shelf lives. Parabens enter the growth of mould and microorganisms such as bacteria and their products. Some common parabens used in skin care products are butylparaben, propylparaben, methylparaben, and isobutylparaben. They are commonly used in moisturisers and some makeup products. Parabens are considered safe for cosmetic products and do not pose any health risks because they’re only used in small quantities. However, regarding skin care products such as moisturisers, research has shown that parabens can easily pass through your skin and into your body. This can be highly problematic as parabens can stay in your body tissues and fluids. They have also been found in the breast issues of people with breast cancer. Moreover, they can also interfere with hormone production and adversely affect regular reproductive function in both men and women.

Sulphates

They are salts formed when sulphuric acid reacts with another chemical. Sulphates are also produced from petroleum and plant sources such as coconut and palm oil. They are used for lathering purposes as they act as surfactants. To sum up, sulphates can irritate your eyes and skin, and also prematurely clear off dye from your hair. Not only this, but sulphates are also equally harmful to the environment as deriving them from natural sources is destroying rainforests. When they have washed away, sulphates can be toxic for aquatic species. For that reason, always purchase products that containΒ no sulphates.Β

Mineral Oils

They belong to the class of chemicals known as hydrocarbons which contain only carbon and hydrogen. Common hydrocarbons are paraffin, petrolatum and mineral oil, which are widely used as emollients as they have low volatility and smooth texture when applied to the skin. Although it locks in moisture, helps heal dry, irritated skin, and makes the product feel luxurious, mineral oil can also clog pores due to its barrier effect on your skin. Creams that have a combination of mineral oils and paraffin can damage the skin barrier and increase water loss. For that reason, it is highly suggested to use products withΒ no mineral oil.
